Systematic Instruction: A structured literacy approach involves systematic and explicit teaching of foundational skills. We will provide structured lessons that focus on phonemic awareness, letter-sound relationships, and other pre-literacy skills.
Hands-On Activities: Structured literacy can involve hands-on activities and tangible materials. For example, using manipulatives, flashcards, and interactive games to reinforce letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and early writing skills.
Personalized Instruction: Structured literacy allows for personalized instruction based on each child's needs. We can tailor activities to address individual strengths and challenges, ensuring a more effective learning experience.
Multisensory Techniques: Many structured literacy approaches emphasize multisensory techniques, involving different senses in the learning process. For example, incorporating movement, tactile experiences, and auditory cues to reinforce learning.
Reading Aloud: Reading aloud is a fundamental aspect of pre-literacy development. We can engage children in interactive read-aloud sessions, discussing the story, asking questions, and promoting language development.
Storytelling and Vocabulary Building: Structured literacy involves building a strong vocabulary foundation. Storytelling, discussions, and exposure to rich language will grow their vocabulary so that words are more readily recognized when being sounded out.
Phonics Games and Activities: Traditional phonics games and activities can be highly effective in teaching letter-sound relationships and blending sounds. For example, playing word-building games, using magnetic letters, or creating word cards.
Print Awareness Activities: Print awareness is a foundational skill and includes activities such as pointing out words in the environment, understanding the direction words are read in a book, and recognizing titles in books.
Writing Practice: Structured literacy involves early writing experiences. Children can practice forming letters and simple words, OR can express their stories through drawing and sequencing pictures.
Parental Involvement: Parents are encouraged to actively participate in their child's literacy development. We will provide a list of fun activities you can do at home to reinforce what your child learns in our Blooming Readers Pre-Literacy Group.
